![]() ![]() Criticism is seldom neutral and this needs to be admitted by the reviewer who thanks to the widespread availability of media is no longer a connoisseur. The reviewer needs to not only respond to the artist but also to the gallery while the review also becomes a form of publicity and as Abigail Solomon-Godeau points out, “ a kind of intermediary between the frenzied pluralism of the marketplace and the sacralised judgement seat that is the museum.” There are more modernist approaches to criticism such as those suggested by Bill Jay in Occams’ Razor in which he considers the photographer, the appreciation of the work, its place in photography’s history, its context in the artist’s culture as well as light upon the creative/artistic approach all of which is actually a lot vaguer than it sounds and likely to result in an elitist view that panders to established assumptions and hierarchies. Her argument starts by outlining the difficulties involved in describing pictures by words and quotes the twentieth century photographer, Edward Weston, who wrote that “ it seems a folly to try to convey its (art ) meaning afresh by means of words.” Apart from this obvious obstacle of the theoretical approach to photography, it is often difficult for the reviewer to obtain images for use in reviews and even when they are available, they are not going to be of similar quality to the original. ![]() After we decided to do the Secret Projects, however, Brotherwise kindly agreed to push their project back a few months to give some space. ![]() This minis Kickstarter had originally been planned for late spring or early summer. That, however, risked undermining the Kickstarter we had already been planning-for the Stormlight minis. I’d been wondering how in the world I was going to get those books to people, and this seemed the perfect way. I didn’t hit on doing a Kickstarter for the Secret Projects until later last year-and as I considered it, I got increasingly excited. Well, the truth was, this one with the Stormlight minis was in the works longer than the Secret Project campaign was. I think you’re all going to be very satisfied with what you get. We’ve been working very hard behind the scenes to get everything ready for you come January. That is a huge show of faith from all of you, and we’re ready to earn it. Our previous Kickstarter raised around 8 million dollars when all the final orders were in. But even I didn’t expect to get a highstorm instead. I’ll admit I knew the seed of something incredible was there, and the showman in me was excited to do my best to make that all come together in a way that would take the world by storm. I can safely say nobody in our company anticipated the explosive success of our Secret Projects Kickstarter. Part Two: On Crowdfunding and Responsibility And in the coming days, we’ll be showing off a great deal of concept art that I think you’ll all find very interesting. Even if you’re not interested in the minis, I think you’ll enjoy looking through the Kickstarter page to see my vision for each of the characters. We’ll be going into depth about how we arrived at the models we created for each of these minis. However, this campaign should be very fun. We’ll try, as always, to be worthy of the trust you show us. I’m going to do my best to mitigate potential problems, but if this is a concern of yours, I hear you. The short version of what I’ll explain in detail below is: I’m aware it’s a little cheeky of me to be doing a second Kickstarter this year, while everyone is waiting for their Secret Projects. But I wanted to up front give a good plug for what we’re doing here. ![]() I’ll talk more about what is cool about this Kickstarter later. They have been a fantastic partner, and they’ve gone above and beyond in trying to get the characters right-often going back to revise a dozen or more times as Isaac and I have requested changes. So I really hope you’ll go take a look at the Kickstarter and consider backing it. ![]() Part One: The Quick Versionīefore I dig into it too deeply, I want to get to the marketing portion. Our friends at Brotherwise have been working hard on preparing this Kickstarter for well over a year-and I’m extremely pleased with the product we’ve managed to put together. I’ve got several points I want to make, but I hope they’ll all come together cohesively. I apologize in advance if this rambles a little. I want to be accountable to you, and aware of potential issues surrounding crowdfunding and the success I’ve been having with it lately. Today, we launch a new Kickstarter campaign-for Stormlight minis and painted figurines. This affords me a chance to talk about a few things relating to the behind the scenes of how this Kickstarter came about, why we’ve partnered with Brotherwise for it, and how I want to approach Kickstarters in the future. ![]() ![]() Range disjunctions that coincide with phylogeographic breaks are consistent with the effects of geological or physical processes (like glaciations) that limit dispersal, and implicate dispersal barriers in the origin of the disjunct range (e.g., Muñoz-Salazar et al. The concordance between the geographical distributions of populations (including patterns such as range disjunctions) and of population genetic variation (phylogeographic breaks) can be used to test biogeographic hypotheses ( Avise 2000). 2003 Marko 2004 Hickerson and Cunningham 2005 Crandall et al. However, this trend conflicts with a conspicuous minority of other studies that reveal strong phylogeographic breaks in spite of prolonged planktonic larval development, or large differences in population genetic structure between sympatric species with similar larval dispersal potential ( Benzie 1999 Swearer et al. 2002 Kelly and Eernisse 2007 Teske et al. Numerous lines of evidence suggest a correlation between the evolutionary gain or loss of planktonic larval development and the magnitude or geographical scale of neutral genetic differentiation among marine animal populations ( Arndt and Smith 1998 Bohonak 1999 Kyle and Boulding 2000 Grosberg and Cunningham 2001 Hellberg et al. Direct estimates of realized dispersal in species with planktotrophic development are restricted for logistical reasons to cases in which realized dispersal is limited to small spatial scales (e.g., Knowlton and Keller 1986), but inferences based on oceanography and larval duration suggest that realized dispersal can exceed 10 3–10 4 km per generation ( Scheltema 1986 Shanks et al. 1998) is arguably greatest among sessile and sedentary marine animals that have prolonged development of feeding planktonic (planktotrophic) larvae. Such range disjunctions may be initiated and maintained by a complex combination of factors, encompassing extrinsic geological and climatic barriers to dispersal and colonization, and intrinsic biological properties of organisms including habitat preferences and dispersal capabilities ( Schwaninger 2008). ![]() The surprising and discordant spatial distribution of populations and alleles suggests that historical vicariance (possibly caused by glaciations) and contemporary dispersal barriers (possibly caused by oceanographic conditions) both shape population genetic structure in this species.Įxplaining the origin and persistence of large geographical discontinuities in species distributions, such as the antitropical distributions of many temperate-zone animals and plants, is one of the original goals of evolutionary ecology ( Darwin 1859 Ekman 1953 Briggs 1987 Wiley 1988 Lindberg 1991). Populations from Vancouver Island and California were undifferentiated with evidence of high gene flow or very recent separation across the range disjunction between them. Northern populations from Alaska and Haida Gwaii were strongly differentiated from all southern populations from Vancouver Island and California. However, this population genetic discontinuity does correspond to previously described phylogeographic breaks in other species. We found a strong phylogeographic break at Queen Charlotte Sound in British Columbia that was not in the location predicted by the geographical distribution of the populations. miniata range using multilocus sequence data (mtDNA, nuclear introns) and multilocus genotype data (microsatellites). There are four celebrities who have to guess who the person is who did the interesting thing.
